Weekend at AmericasMart

AmericasMart. Three bldgs. Eighteen floors each. I cannot even count how many showrooms on each floor. There's something like 8million sq feet of space, filled with both permanent and temporary showrooms, The permanent ones are open pretty much year round, while the temps only set up for the big markets that take place a few times a year. At AmericasMart, the biggest is the twice yearly AmericasMart Gift and Home Show. It is held in January and July.
I started visiting the Atlanta Mart back in 2003, when I began working for a company that designs balloons and giftware. The first time was absolutely overwhelming! I'd never seen anything like it. Showroom after showroom and more and more showrooms - all packed with their newest products, biggest ideas, brightest colors. I was reeling from it all.

But, as the years went by, I learned my way around and learned more about what was taking place at this downtown center of commerce. Retailers from all over the country come to Atlanta to buy for their stores. They buy gifts, housewares, clothing, furniture, linens, rugs, stationery, toys, kids clothes, bags, jewelry, luggage, shoes, accessories, art, gourmet foods, home and garden, including furniture, holiday decorations, both small and very very large.

Getting your products in front of these buyers requires a huge commitment of work, time and $$$. The risks are great, but the payoff can be enormous. If you have a great product that stands out, odds are good that you can get noticed. Be honest with yourself, if your product is just average, don't waste your money. There is a lot of competition at the big shows, but also LOTS of buyers that have $$ to spend. And finding the next greatest thing is what they are there for.

Before you begin in ernest trying to get your wares into a large trade show, you'll need to ask yourself some hard questions. Do you have the resources to pull it off?How many of your widgets can you make to fill orders you might write at the show? How will you manufacture the products that you'll sell? When you find yourself writing orders all day and fantasizing about that trip to the islands, don't forget that you still have to make all those items. You won't necessarily have to make them all by hand but you do have to know how you are going to fill the sales you might get. Explore your manufacturing capabilities before you take your first step into a wholesale market. Know your limits, your costs (ALL your costs) and your freight options.

Our Spring show is an expanded 2 day event that takes place the last weekend of April, the 28th and 29th. We will be in our new location in the Ben's Bikes lot and there
is the possibility of overnight camping for out of town vendors. There will be food vendors, activities, music and other entertainment to be announced throughout the
weekend. We are heavily promoting this show around the southeast--if you know anyone who would like to distribute fliers out of town, let us know! We plan on taking
advantage of the crowds that will be in Athens for the Twilight Criterium, an internationally recognized bike race happening simultaneously that has been taking place for 30 years and brings thousands to our city annually.

AmericasMart - and Selling Wholesale

I have been working on gathering info about selling at large gift shows, I wanted to make this series the best it can be. I know a little about the gift and home markets. I have visited the AmericasMart in Atlanta 18 times, Surtex in NYC with the National Stationery Show once, The Gift and Home Market in Las Vegas once, the Furniture Market in High Point, NC several times, the Canton Fair in Guanghzou China once, and Maison & Objet Paris once. The company I work for has permanent showrooms in Dallas and Atlanta and sets up in several other shows every year. I've seen indie artists in all of them, and have personally watched several make good at shows. Like Boston artist Curly Girl, she had a temp booth, then her line was picked up by one of the big buying companies (more about those later) and now she has her own showroom plus other showrooms carrying her line.

Of course, with that kind of volume, your wares are probably going to be mass produced. You can always stick to small orders in specialty shops if you want to keep producing your art yourself.

I have never set up my own booth to sell. So I'm not really an expert. But, I DO know a bit about the gift markets, and I've seen makers break in more than once. It can be done.

So, with that said, I will try to get the first of the series up before the weekend is out. Please share with your friends, it is always helpful to get comments and share experiences and ideas.

The world doesn’t need more gray, and the blues are covered, too. What consumer products need is a jolt, a shot of energy and boldness, all of which comes from Tangerine Tango, the reddish-orange hue that Pantone announced last week as its top color for 2012.

“There’s the element of encouragement with orange, it’s building on the ideas of courage and action, that we want to move on to better things. I think it would be a disservice to go with a relaxed, soothing color now,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, the research division of Pantone Inc., which creates color standards for the fashion, beauty and home industries.

The annual forecast for the next year’s dominant color takes into consideration both what Pantone thinks shoppers want and need. Those are influenced by the designer runways, fabric shows, news events, pop culture and consumer habits. “Part of whatwe do is look at the zeitgeist,” Eiseman explained. “We have to look at everything in the world around us. It’s not an arbitrary choice.”

Consumer spending is a big player in reviving the economy, and it needs adrenaline, she said. Orange is a more urgent call to action than last year’s hot-pink hue Honeysuckle, which was also supposed to channel cheerfulness coupled with nostalgia. Before that, there was the more serene turquoise and optimistic yellow.

“Color is really emotion,” agreed Beth Eckerstrom, director of trend and product development at Crate and Barrel. “Everyone thinks it’s a physical thing, but it’s really emotion.”

As she picks the palette for future products, Eckerstrom said, she looks for shades that feel fresh but still are familiar, not foreign. “Over the past years, there’s been a return to organic, natural product finishes and colors. They’re complex neutrals, not beige and taupe, but people want to bring the outside in. This tangerine color is a fresh accent. ... It seems like such a bright, but it’s really a gerbera daisy-flower shade, which makes it sort of neutral.”

Facebook Friday - Promo Tip #1- Tagging Photos

When you attend a craft show, market or any public event, take lots and lots of photos. Post the best of them in albums to your fan page, then encourage friends and fans to tag themselves in the photos. You can also tag popular businesses or locations that may appear in the photos. Also, if you want people to look at more of your photos, take the time to add captions. People do enjoy reading witty captions.

Every time someone tags themselves or a friend in one of your photos, it goes out onto their wall and the friends' News Feeds, plus gives your a link back to your page that someone else might explore in the future. These thumbnails in the Feed are more noticable than text and more likely to be explored by a curious user.

Exciting News Everyone!
After our successful first time out at Ben's Bikes we are moving forward with our plans for Spring--we like our new location so much that we have decided to do our Spring event there not one but 2 days this year, April 28-29, which is also Twilight weekend. For those of you who may not know, Twilight is a bike race that brings crowds to rival autumn game days, and we want to take advantage of this influx of out-of-towners who will have downtime to fill during their 4 days of races. There will be overnight camping for artists, so plan on spending the last weekend in April here in Athens, where there will be plenty going on and lots to see and do! Applications go up January 5th, so get them in early---we look forward to hearing from you!

The mild sunny weather this year provided the perfect backdrop for a day of laid-back holiday shopping. We are pleased to say that our first time at Ben's Bikes worked out wonderfully, and the Athens community came out to shop and support our many local and regional artists throughout the festival. With beverages from Ursa Minor and eats from the local Farm 255 food cart, many lingered for hours enjoying the friendly atmosphere at our small-scale show. The nearby playground turned out to be a nice addition for the little ones, and live music from Brazilian band Coconut Moon added holiday cheer and interest to DJ Mahoghany's upbeat grooves. All in all, we couldn't be more pleased with the turnout and the transition into our new home, and we look forward to planning our Spring show. Details will be released in the coming weeks, so check back soon for all the latest!

I am a self-taught knitter. I started knitting when I was 16; I wanted a bulky sweater jacket and could not afford the hefty price the stores were asking for it. So, being a man of resource, I set out teaching myself to knit. One year later, I was wearing that sweater jacket. I became addicted to knitting, the thought of creating something out of a piece of string fascinated me. Now, I primarily knit only in the fall/winter months; I own and run a small campground business in the spring/summer months. Lace, fair-isle sweaters and caps are my favorite items to knit; and the only socks I have ever knitted were for holding Christmas presents. I prefer making things that are useful and practical and create my own patterns and methods for doing so. The more challenging the project, the better. I prefer using natural fibers: cotton, wool, alpaca, llama, angora, etc. I teach workshops and classes. I started making these caps a little over a year ago and have sold many, many, many caps. Handcrafted mosaic art work by me, the artist, Judy Mendel living in Dacula, GA. Inspired to create most often from unwanted or broken little finds. I love the art of mosaics. Using glass, recycled items, mixed media, handcrafted stoneware clay pieces from my studio, broken glass, vintage/retro china plates, or ceramic/pottery dishes/pots. Making new again an item that normally would be tossed is the best part to me. I find mosaics relaxing and very much like putting together a puzzle. I am able to blend various tesserae together to create a unique piece that tells it's own story as you see it each time. I have a home studio that I work in full time creating wall hangings, welcome signs, inspirational signs, tables, mirrors, flower pots, bird baths, jewelry boxes, and whatever lands on the table next. I am "that person" with a lot of little hopefuls waiting on the shelves to be used in the next piece of art, not considered the junk lady yet. Each mosaic is an original piece of art and can't be duplicated, what I'm not able to draw on paper I can visualize it in a mosaic and arrange on a surface with a little tile, twisting, and adhesive to create art that is interesting - that is what has drawn me to making mosaics

I am back from my trip to Tennessee for the Thanksgiving holiday. While it was nice to take a quick trip home, and see family, and even get to come back on the back roads through the Smoky Mountains, I am very pleased to be back getting ready for next week's Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa. It is always so exciting, the rush at the last minute trying to get everything in place.

Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa Holiday Market is seeking volunteers to help our event run smoothly.

Thank you for your interest in helping us to put on this event. We’re asking

everyone who is interested to sign up for at least a two hour block of time, if

possible. All are welcome to help out.

Load In: Set up is from 8am until 10am, when the show starts. We will need

several people to greet our vendors and help them find their spaces if necessary.

We will send the vendors a map of the show layout beforehand; most will

already know where they belong. Some vendors might need help setting up

tents, or lugging their stuff to the lot.

Greeters: We need friendly, outgoing people to welcome our guests to the

show, answer questions, hand out programs, etc. Greeters will also be available

to give our vendors a break if they need it, check on them and make sure they

are doing ok or do not need anything. Just use your best judgement, some

people will not want/need help. The main thing is that they know we’re there to

provide assistance if needed.

Load Out: Volunteers help vendors break down their displays and load out.

Load Out volunteers also will stick around until everyone is gone, to look over the

lot and make sure everything is tidied up properly.

Only a couple weeks until the Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa 2011 Holiday Market! We are really excited about some changes this time around, and are glad all of you want to participate in this year's expanded market.

As most of you know, we have a new location, on the corner of Broad and Pope streets in the Ben's Bikes lot. While we will miss our old space, our new digs open up so many possibilities, with more room to include a diversity of activities and vendors. We will have food carts, live demos, art cars, and a photography booth for patrons to get their picture taken at our event. Best of all, the owners of Ben's Bikes are psyched to be hosting our event and can't wait to welcome all of you. We appreciate their positive and friendly attitude and we know that will spread to everyone involved.

We are really happy about all the quality applications this time around, and hope you will help us in spreading the word to your mailing lists and via twitter, facebook, and whatever other networking tools you use. Hi All!
We are pleased to announce that the Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa Holiday Market will take place in a new space this year! After 5 great years at the corner of Clayton and Pulaski Streets, it is time for a change, and we are very excited to announce that Ben's Bikes will be hosting our show on December 3rd. For those of you who aren't familiar with Ben's Bikes, they are a very community-oriented bike repair and retail shop that is graciously welcoming our show into their space. Located at the corner of Broad and Pope Streets, this lot is less than a mile from campus, with tons of drive by traffic on the main artery into downtown, plus lots more room which means more vendors and more activities. We will be hosting food carts and hands-on demos from a few local artists, and we look forward to the expansion.

Of course, since this is a new location for us we will be working extra hard to get the word out and we hope you will, too! And if you have any ideas for more fun we can add, please send us an email to let us know--we believe this will definitely be our biggest, most diverse show yet. Hello All!

Just a reminder about POPtoberfair, the combination record swap, comics/zine and crafts fair that Indie Craftstravaganzaa is curating in conjunction with Athens POPfest on October 15th. We are super excited to be a part of this show at the Classic Center and we think the turnout is going to be fantastic!
In case you didn't know:

POPFest has been happening since 2004 and draws over 5,000 music + indie culture lovers from all over the world to Athens, Ga.
POPFest has several major sponsors, which means tons of ads and billboards--an important sponsor is our local paper, the Banner-Herald, which distributes the shows program to over 15,000 people in their weekend edition. There will be a two page center spread about POPtoberfair in this program highlighting our portion of this multi-day event--yay for us!
The weekend of POPtoberfair the Classic Center is completely booked with other conventions, including a nurse's convention in the hall next to ours (read: tons of female shoppers on site!)
We are joining forces with 2 other established local events that draw their own crowd of folks, and we think there's going to be lots of overlap between all of the shoppers

To summarize, this show is only $50 to participate, you are provided an 8 by 8 table, and the deadline to apply is September 24th. We are allowing a wider range of wares than we ordinarily do at Craftstravaganzaa, so if you have any questions, just ask! And yes, you may share a table. This is a great opportunity for first-timers or less experienced vendors to take part in what is sure to be a really fun event. Helllooooo Everyone!

It's been awhile, longer than we would have liked, but after working around a few issues, Craftstravaganzaa is back with not one but TWO exciting shows in the works!

First off, we are pleased to announce that we have been asked by Athens PopFest to curate an arts and crafts show for a special event they are having in conjunction with their music festival in October. We will join FLUKE! Comics Fest and the Secret Record Swap at the Classic Center on October 15th for a wonderful day of indie music and craft shopping. This will be our first indoor show, so it will be different from our outdoor shows, but it will have advantages for many of you, including a lower cost and easier set up (see details below). Also, it is going to put the Craftstravaganzaa name and our other events into the minds of a whole new group of folks through the POPFest and Classic Center promo materials, which will go out to over 12,000 people. There will be a limited number of tables, so we hope many of you will want to take advantage of this opportunity to do an unconventional show among a diverse group of like-minded folks.

To answer so many of the emails we have been getting, yes, we have a date for our Holiday Show! It will take place on the first weekend of December, Saturday December 3rd. As many of you know, we have had some issues with Prestige Parking in the past over the use of the lot, but after looking at some alternatives and many discussions with various people, we are very happy to say that we will remain in our original location with all of its many advantages. We plan to bring back our indoor Vintage Market as well as the clothing Swap-o-Rama-Rama with Gretchen Elsner, plus music, food and drinks from the Caledonia. We just love that corner space, and know that many of you do as well, so we look forward to seeing lots of faces old and new for our Holiday market.

In other news, we have enlisted the help of someone who we think is going to be a great addition to our team, and her name is Lauren Benbrook. She will be answering emails and assisting with many aspects of running this show, including being present at events and giving input on future developments with Indie Craftstravaganzaa. We look forward to having her around and we know all of our vendors will appreciate this addition as well. So, welcome aboard Lauren!

you will be provided with 8 ft tables (no covering) for a fee of $45, application fee of $5

Just sending out a courtesy email to let you know that we have deleted our Shoppy Bag account and apologize if you have gotten pulled into this site through our email address. It seems that once someone you know signs up for this site it goes into your email and uses your contacts to claim there are tagged photos of you in order to get you to register--we have been bombarded with emails from them. You can also use a link in their emails to delete your account, which is my suggestion if you haven't already. I don't really understand the point of this site, but I really do not like the hijacking of contacts and misleading emails they send, so I am choosing not to participate. We enjoyed a fantastic turnout for our Spring event on Saturday May 7th! Sunny skies and a soft breeze complemented our outdoor market perfectly and kept people flowing throughout the entire day, browsing and buying from the best Athens has to offer in fine arts and crafts.

The Caledonia provided a space for folks to relax and enjoy lunch and cocktails on the patio before taking advantage of our newest features, the Swap-O-Rama-Rama, and the indoor Vintage Market at Craftstravangazaa! Both proved to be an assets that we will be welcoming back and developing for future events.

I took over 700 photos at the event, and am now working on culling, cropping, color correcting, labeling and getting them ready upload to the galleries.

We are excited at the way Craftstravaganzaa continues to grow and collect new fans, and we hope to see you in the Fall!

Athens Indie Craftstravaganzaa is a bi-annual handmade market that brings an eclectic selection of emerging artists and crafters from the South and beyond. At Craftstravaganzaa you won't find any commercially produced or imported goods, only quality items handcrafted by the artists themselves. Expect fine arts and functional pieces, eco-chic fashions and innovative goods made with an eye towards sustainability.

This open-air marketplace event features tasties from local catering company sugarbeet pastry, lovely libations served at the Caledonia Lounge, and DJs to keep the shopping experience lively and fun.

Swap-O-Rama-Rama is a clothing swap and do-it-yourself workshop in which a community explores creative reuse through the recycling of used clothing.

Bring a $3-5 donation and bag of clothes or notions, and yourself and let's make some what-not! All ages welcome!

The Swap When you attend the swap bring at least one bag of your unwanted clothing and a small donation (each swap varies depending on available funding). Every swap begins with a giant collective pile of clothing, the unwanted clothing of all who attend. Everyone is welcome to dive in and find their next new/used items from the pile. Take as little or as much clothing from this pile as you like, it's all free.

DIY Workshops After you have chosen your new clothes slide on over to one of the sewing stations and attend a workshop. Learn to make modifications or totally transform your finds. Each swap features a variety of workshops by local artists who are there to share their sewing and modification secrets with you. All the materials you need to sew, embroider, bead, fix, repair, knit etc, are suppled.

On Site DIY Stations Swap-O-Rama-Rama also offers on site DIY with skilled artists to help you get started. You'll find designers with sewing machines ready to teach you how to make modifications to your new/used duds. Or you might try the hand sew area and decoration station where you can learn to embroider, knit, crochet, etc. A silk screen station offers many amazing designs for immediate transfer as well as an opportunity to make your own screens using aYUDU silk screen machine.

Fashion Runway Some swaps host a participatory fashion runway featuring the silly and the sophisticated. All are invited to take a playful spin down the runway in their most fabulous finds. Ask the audience for their opinion on the outfit you just plucked from the pile. The runway will also feature a fashion show of the local designers who staffed the event. Of course all designs are made of reuse. And for those who are emotionally attached to their clothing, you might find there is runway time for clothing story telling. Use this space to share interesting stories about the clothing you've brought to the swap.

Free Labels for Relabeling Before you hit the street in your new recycled clothes consider covering up the existing branding with a new label, one that celebrates the DIY communities collective creativity rather than the brand of a corporation. At some Swap-O-Rama-Rama's you will find free 100% Recycled or Modified by Me labels and sew them on at the swap or at home.

It's that time people! With about three weeks until the show, we've got plenty to do to spread the word about Craftstravaganzaa!

We've found that each artist promoting his/her own appearance at the show works fantastically to reach the widest audience. Let your family, friends and fans know that you will be at Craftstravaganzaa and invite them to visit for their holiday shopping. Ask them to invite their friends and family.

We have banners and graphics for you to post on your marketing media (mailing lists, website, blogs, etsy, facebook, myspace, twitter etc) to let your fans and customers know you will be participating in Craftstravaganzaa. The banners are available on the AIC website, check the FORMS page.

We also have fliers that can be downloaded from our website (FORMS page), please print and paste a few around your work/gym/store etc. (these too will be available by the end of this weekend)

Visit our Facebook Event page and click the SELECT GUESTS TO INVITE link upper left and invite all your friends. Ask them to do the same.

The Indie Fixx Galleria is an online showcase of handmade, indie-made & vintage goods. Think of it as an 'indie mall' featuring a juried mix of designers & boutiques to provide a curated shopping experience.

The Indie Fixx Galleria is a showcase of handmade & indie (independently-made) goods. Think of it as an ‘indie mall’ featuring a juried mix of indie designers, crafters, artists & indie boutiques that carry indie-made goods. And now vintage goods too!

Periodically throughout the year, IndieFixx puts together a new Galleria around a theme to provide a curated shopping experience, just like at ‘the mall’, but only featuring hand-made, independently made and vintage goods.

To apply to be a part of the Galleria: Use the Apply Now button below or email your url or 2-3 product images. There are a limited number of spots open each go round.

Criteria used in judging applicants include: product originality, quality of product, quality of photography, type of products, shopping experience and shop & product appeal among other attributes. The goal of the Galleria is promote the individual participating shops and indie shopping in general. IndieFixx aims to provide a new venue for shops to publicize their products while encouraging shoppers to expand their shopping horizons and support small independent businesses as opposed to big mega-chains. There are no actual products available for sale at the Galleria; instead it is only a showcase of goods offered by the participating shops.

The Category selection field on the application is working fine now. I've rooted out the error, and should have no more difficulty with it.

The problem was that the form read JEWELRY in the pulldown menu as the default. The form manager requires a choice be made, so whenvever someone's choice was jewelry, and they didn't change the form to make a selection, the form would throw an error. I fixed it now by making the default say CHOOSE ONE, and making JEWELRY on of the choices to be selected.

It should work fine now.

FREE Tai Chi in the Park this Saturday - Athens, GA

Athens Regional's Mind Body Institute is offering a FREE Tai Chi in the Park this Saturday, April 2 from 9:30-10:30 am.

The park is located on Talmadge Drive just below the Medical Services Building. Spend a lovely spring Saturday morning outside practicing Tai Chi and improve balance, concentration, energy and relaxation.

This is open to both beginners and those with experience. No registration is needed.

NYIGF Accepting Applications for Juried Divisions

I got this from one of the newsletters I subscribe to at work. This market is a fantastic opportunity for the serious artisan/designer.

Designers, artists and manufacturers are invited to submit applications for juried, design-focused divisions at the summer 2011 New York International Gift Fair(NYIGF), running August 13-18. Applications are available online at www.nyigf.com/apply .

The juried divisions include Accent on Design; A+: The Young Designers' Platform at Accent on Design; Handmade Designer Maker and Handmade Global Design.

New for 2011 is the addition of two NYIGF-funded Carol Sedestrom Ross "Maker-to-Market" Scholarships, which will be awarded to two Handmade applicants to support their wholesale market participation. Every Handmade applicant will automatically be considered for the scholarship, which is funded by NYIGF. The annual scholarships include one free exhibit space in Handmade Designer Maker and Handmade Global Design, in addition to a five-night hotel stay in New York City during market week, round-trip transportation, tradeshow marketing support and market-readiness consultation from industry experts. The scholarship is named in honor of the late Carol Sedestrom Ross, GLM's former director of craft marketing.

Accent on Design showcases the latest and most innovative designs spanning all product categories. The Selection Committee's criteria for acceptance includes:

•Original, creative and authentic product design
•New and innovative use of materials
•Products that address and solve problems
•Consistent and continuous new product creations
•A focus on contemporary design as perceived by the jury
•Functionality
Handmade is a unique and upscale juried forum that features international and domestic artisans, designers and manufacturers of only the finest handcrafted merchandise. The Selection Committee's criteria for acceptance includes:

•Unique and original work when reviewing contemporary craft
•Authentic design when reviewing traditional and ethnic craft
•Products that are marketable in the framework of the NYIGF®
•Products that are appropriate for the Handmade section
